Mystery Partner / Pat Taylor Trophy 2015

Sunday 1st November 09.00 – 14.00 hrs

Still, quiet mysterious fog shrouded   lakes waited patiently for the bell to toll announcing   the start of the Mystery Partner Competition 2015 -. Sixteen eerily eager participants began their quest . Questions lingered Would the title holders, Terry Tappenden and Dave Brown   retain the trophy ? – it would be Terry’s fourth consecutive win and Dave s second having enjoyed victory   in 2010 . Would the Two Tattooed fish make an appearance? When would the mist lift? When would the quiet water give rise to a ripple on the surface?   Who left their bacon sandwich ?

Five very pleasant hours graced our Fly Fishers. A total of fifty three fish were caught . The Tattooed fish remained elusive . The mist rose, the sun shone, a slight ripple developed. No one claimed the bacon sandwich .

14.00 hrs Fishing ceased. Bags were duly weighed and recorded. Pat Taylor made the Mystery Partner Draw, each participant is drawn a partner – their ‘bag’ weights are combined, the heaviest joint bag wins.

Results

Wednesday 4th March 2015 Lenches Lakes Fishing Report

With temperatures forecast to soar into the ’teens’ at the end of the week ,you will  need to hang on tight  to those rods – our Rainbows love this time of year – they will be jumping on. Surface water temperature has risen to  a balmy 5/6 degrees Celsius. Phenomenal fly life bursting into action in both  gin clear lakes . Weed is not an issue here at the Lenches Lakes – we do manage the weed so that it supports the entomology of the lakes – after all we want flies and food for the water fowl however we have the technology to keep it flourishing down in the depths and not hinder lower and mid depth fishing.

The trout are having a ball – this morning everyone has caught their fish, one fly fisher took advantage of the ‘Follow On Ticket’ -once you have caught your ticket limit of fish you are able to ‘up’ your ticket by going back to the Clubhouse and purchasing a ‘Follow On’  at £6.00 which enables you to catch one more fish – you may have as many Follow On s as you wish !!. – This mornings flies -Buzzer, Cats Whisker, Montana,

The Tattooed Fish has survived another week  the ‘pot’ now stands at £165 .

Catch and Release tickets continue whilst the water is beautifully cool £25 to members and £28 to non members. Catch and kill the first two and catch and release four more. – Top Lake only.   Regular tickets are available too.

Tight Lines for the coming week – We look forward to welcoming you

Amanda

Tuesday 24th February 2015 Lenches Lakes Fishing Report over last few days

Both lakes received their weekly Rainbow Trout   top up last Friday. However even the most experienced fly fishers were struggling on Saturday, There were beginners catching and experienced blanking !!! It was one of those days – no explanation to it – I think most of you would agree , there are days when you blank even when everyone one around you is catching !!!

Sunday mornings Troutmasters Fish Off was great sport – seven fly fishers braved the weather forecast – at 09.00 am perfect, albeit a little nippy, conditions welcomed the start of the five hour competition .   Jason Malin managed to tempt two beauties out of the stand in front of the Clubhouse in the first thirty minutes –  orange/white buzzer below an indicator , one of which 4 lb 5oz. He got his third just inside the first hour hence qualifying for four lots of 8oz’s bonus weight ( 8oz for each complete hour remaining of the comp.)

Mike Sinclair , Ken Savage and Dave Brown all completed their three fish within the second hour. Ross Keightly finished with two hours remaining , Pete Major and Paul Sutor employed there best perseverance techniques as the weather conditions unleashed terrific winds accompanied with persistent driving rain – They both caught their much deserved fish – hats off to you boys -   great lesson to all spectating from the comfort of the   Clubhouse-

Flies used were Buzzer, Glitzy Cats Whisker, Hot tailed Zonkers, Appetizer, Orange Blob, Orange Damsel, green damsel,

Jason Malin was our winner with three fish weighing in at 10lb 5oz ( 8lb 5oz plus the 2lb bonus weight). He goes on to fish at Grafham Water in the Troutmaster final on September 21st                                       Congratualtions - Jason a determined fish off – Have ‘fun’ at the final.

Julia Beaumont takes the Junior Troutmasters   title from Lenches Lakes – she will be invited to the Junior final at Stonebridge Fishing Lakes on the weekend of 25/26th July – Congratulations Julia .

Todays south easterly wind has allowed all fly fishers to take their fish – buzzer, damsel and white zonker

The Tattooed Fish has survived the weekend and the ‘pot’ now stands at £125 .

Catch and Release tickets continue whilst the water is beautifully cool £25 to members and £28 to non members. Catch and kill the first two and catch and release four more. – Top Lake only.   Regular tickets are available too.

Tight Lines for the coming week – We look forward to welcoming you

Hoorah for spring. Welcome with open arms the gloriously longer daylight hours, pleasantly increasing temperatures and the backside of all that rainfall. The Lakes have done very well over the winter, coping with crazy amounts of precipitation. Unsurprisingly ‘run off’ surface water managed to flow into the top lake twice which eventually coloured both lakes, I am not sure of the science behind it, however each time the lakes freeze over and  thaw  the water appears gin clear once again – Hoorah!

Thanks to all of you winter stalwarts; proving winter is fun for fly fishing especially when you have remembered your thermals and waterproofs. Some pretty impressive trout have been landed; Tigers, Blues and Rainbows. In the past couple of weeks two terrific Tigers have been caught by Gail Greenhouse (3lb) and Eric Finch (3 ½ lb), Rainbows Mark Johnson 4lb 8oz,Gordon Jaques  4lb, Jean Sutor 4lb. Blue -.Jeff Johnson 3lb Obviously size is not everything, those regular 2 lb ers have proved to be terrific sport as well as a delicious dinner.  On the theme ofsport and dinner this is a wonderful opportunity enlighten you on  our stocking policy.

The majority of our fish are 2lb Rainbows. When the water is in pristine condition i.e. cool  gin clear and erupting with fly life we pop some heavier ones in to add variety and spice  to your fishing session. A batch of larger fish have been ordered which we will begin to trickle in with each stocking from week beginning 18th March weights from 4lb – 10lb.

Blue, Brown and Tiger trout are put in occasionally – variety spice of life

Brown trout. If you catch a good sized one 1lb 8oz upwards please dispatch it. Do not release. If you do happen to catch a lighter one, please ask a Fly fisher nearby to witness and then release.

We generally stock once every five to ten days –dependant on weather, water condition and how it has been fishing. When the water is warm i.e. during the summer months, but not too warm for feeding fish (fingers crossed we have sunshine at some point this year!) I ask for lighter fish approximately 1lb 8oz. These guys tend to cope with the warmer temperatures a little better than their bigger chums. The fish we have are triploids – sexless. Hence we can offer fishing all year round and our fly fishers do not have  spent Cock or Hen fish.

Our fish suppliers have recently been altering their fish feed to one which contains less colouring. The flesh is now less artificially coloured a step away from the bright ‘salmon pink’ , a step towards a more naturally coloured fish. The flesh and taste reflects their diet and wellbeing, here at the  Lenches Lakes they thrive with several strong springs, pure, reed bed filtered water and fly /nymph life to die for !!! Proving a delight to eat – no earthy taste.

We try and stock so you catch fish! Catch fish not too quickly, not too slowly

Cold smoking trout has been the topic of much conversation in the Clubhouse with Simon constructing a rather effective Cold Smoker. We have enjoyed several experimental ‘smokes’, as of yet we cannot provide an official licensed smoking service for your catch. The process requires; cleaning, filleting, curing, drying and smoking. – Each process requiring official Certificates and licences before going public.

With Spring pushing on plants are moving, buds are bulging and the blessed weed in the bottom lake starts to become a threat to fishing BUT this year we have some brilliant ammunition to throw at it. Having spoken to a couple of lakes who have tried and tested it, the decision was made to try a dye to stop/reduce the rate of weed growth.. It is a dye – bio friendly, environmentally sound, fish and entomology safe. The principle is that it forms a ‘shadow’ on the waters surface that prevents the sunlight filtering through. Hence no photosynthesis can occur and plant life cannot exist or at least growth is restrained - Hoorah (again). Whitsun lake has received  an initial dose which must be topped up once month. We can all watch with baited breathe and hopefully see some decent weed free fishing on the bottom lake once more.

Troutmasters Badges /Competition 2013

What it is, what it means to Lenches Lakes and what it can do for you.

Trout Fisherman Magazine runs Troutmasters which is an on going source of promotion for fisheries who pay an annual fee to be a Troutmasters Lake and fly fishers who return an entry form. Approximately 200 lakes are Troutmaster lakes. Each month the Lakes involved are able to notify the magazine of three heaviest fish by means of a postcard size entry form which is signed and witnessed, in turn fly fishers receive a rather nice and much coveted cloth badge. The Lenches Lakes and our fly fishers get a mention along with the other two hundred lakes in the monthly report section of the Magazine. At the end of each year all badge recipients are invited to a Troutmasters Fish Off (at the qualifying venue – i.e. here at the Lenches Lakes) the winner then goes through to the great Troutmaster competition – ‘the biggest, most prestigious fly fishing competition in Europe’ in recent years it has been held at Grafham Water. Fly fishers who have gone on from the Lenches Lakes Fish Off to fish the final at Grafham have enjoyed the experience of the competition – always a story to tell plus a learning experience.

Morris Jeffs/ Icicle Challenge Results

December 27th 2012

Twenty one festive fly fishers entered this annual social competition , we were extremely glad to see three lady fly fishers in the line up too. Some pretty warm rain welcomed all, the rain eased up, the wind changed direction, the sun shone intermittently which lead to five hours of variable fishing conditions.

Twenty fish came out of the top lake and fifteen from the lower lake on a mix of flies; Black Weavil, Montana, Orange Fritz, Xmas Tree, Sinfoil Fry, Minkie, Cats Whisker, Black Gladiator, Apps Bloodworm.

First Place – Matt Slater and Paul Sutor . Paul caught three fish that weighed a total of 9lb. Matt two fish, one Tiger at 5lb 4oz and one at 3lb 7oz .Total weight 17lb 11oz

Second Place – Jeff Johnson and Matt Parker. Six fish weighing 15lb 2 oz

Third place – Pete and Graham Williams, Five fish at 13lb 6oz

Forth place – Pete Major and Tony Woods , Five fish at 12lb 12oz

Heaviest fish went to Ross Keightley with a 7lb rainbow, from the lower lake.

A good five hours fishing , Thank you to all who fished, all who came along and supported. Have a cracking New Year.

Results and summary of the Pat Taylor Trophy/Mystery Partner Competition

Held on Sunday 16th October 2011

2011 is the sixth year of running this event; Pat Taylor has been involved at the lakes for approximately twenty two years. Initially he organised a fishing syndicate here when we had the original pools, he managed the Club House every Saturday and always did his best to make himself available to help when extra hands were required for tasks in and around the lakes. Since retiring he visits the lakes a couple of times a week, has a cup of tea, a chat and a walk around. This Trophy is in is honour, a token of our appreciation for all the hours he has given to the Lakes.

A brilliant turn out on a brilliant morning ready for some brilliant fishing. Fifthteen Fly fishers stepped up for this social, four of which had not previously entered a fishing competition.  A bright sunny, still day made fishing a pleasure . Most guys were using floating lines success on Buzzer, Nymphs, Montana, Cats Whisker, Damsels There was one Sinking line with Booby which had some fun too. Three Fly Fishers managed to catch five fish, most caught, whilst two managed to blank. The bottom Lake fished very well with fish coming out from several different stands. This competition hinges around the Mystery Partner which is drawn at the end of the day.

Congratulations go to Matt Slater and Nigel Woodhall who caught seven fish between them weighing 14lb. They receive their names on honours board, the trophy to treasure for a year plus a years membership.

Runners up are Kevin Collins and Dave Brown, third place to Collin Pennington and Euan Ferguson, all of which receive Fishing Tickets.

Many thanks to all who entered, so good to see such a mix of ages from mid twenties to mid eighties- Brilliant

Results of Pat Taylor Trophy/Mystery Partner Sunday 18th October 2009 - asw edit

A superb day for fishing; overcast, a light ripple, mild temperature. Eleven competitiors, our sincere warm wishes to  Ken Savage wishing himn a speedy recovery you were missed. The fishing was slow in the first session; Kevin Collins had a few very soft takes with the fish dashing straight towards the stand. As the day progressed fish began to show more than a modest interest in those flies; Buzzers, Cerise Fly, Hot Orange, Tadpole, Cats Whisker, Damsel, Diawl Bach. The heaviest 6 fish were caught by Dave Runicles 13lb 4oz.

Results were;

First - Pete Williams 6 fish at 12lb 12oz / Mick Stephens 3 fish at 6lb 12oz, they won the Trophy for the year, names on Club House honours board and a years free membership worth £30

Second - Dave Runicles 6 fish at 13lb 4oz /Tanky Taylor 1 fishat 1lb 14oz, they won a 3 fish/5 hour fishing ticket worth £18

Third - Pete Jeffs 4 fish at 10lb 2oz/ John Ward 1 fish at 1lb 12 oz, they won a 2fish/3 hour fishing ticket worth £12

Pat Taylor presented the prizes

Many thanks to all who entered, a fine days entertainment it was also reassuring to see Whitsun Lake/bottom lake returning some good fish. Photos should be in the local press plus I have sent them into Trout Fishermen
